Kidney disease is the elephant in the room

Oftentimes, our kidneys take a real beating. After all, they have a pretty big role in keeping our bodies functioning every second of every day. They filter waste from our blood, maintain balance of our bodily fluids, and produce hormones that help regulate blood pressure, promote bone health, and produce red blood cells.

Unfortunately, if your kidneys are in poor health, you probably won’t know about it until your doctor diagnoses you with some form of kidney disease. That’s because kidney disease typically fails to produce any urgent, definitive symptoms.

In fact, you might not present with any major symptoms until you’ve already lost 90 percent of your kidney function. Pretty scary, right?

To help people avoid this terrifying shock, the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) recently released a statement to warn of the vast threat of kidney disease.

In an ASN news release, Adeera Levin, the president of the International Society of Nephrology, said: “Using all these sources of data, and existing estimates of acute and chronic kidney diseases, we estimate [there are] approximately 850 million kidney patients — a number which surely signifies an ‘epidemic’ worldwide.”

But what’s missing here?

Oddly, this dire warning failed to provide details on three vitally important factors:

  1. It didn’t detail the warning signs of kidney disease. (As I mentioned earlier, the disease is “silent,” but there are a few key signals which indicate something is wrong.)
  2. It didn’t mention the causes of kidney disease, which would help many in knowing how to prevent it.
  3. Nor did it mention any of the popular drugs that can put dangerous amounts of stress on your kidneys.

So to take up where the ASN left off, we’ll start with the simple warning signs that your kidneys are not in top condition. They include:

  • Consistently itchy skin
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Foot or ankle swelling
  • Reduced appetite

It’s also important to note that seniors are at a much greater risk of kidney dysfunction than younger people, especially if there’s a family history of kidney disease. That brings us to the primary causes of kidney disease, which also serve as warning signs:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • High blood sugar
  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes

As you can see, these are serious health challenges. And, to some extent, they all involve blood or blood vessel disorders. Your kidneys filter an astounding 35 gallons of blood daily, so it’s no wonder that kidney failure leads to widespread health decline.

But while mainstream medicine warns us about kidney disease, they don’t do nearly enough to make us aware of the common drugs — used by millions daily — that can wreck your precious kidneys, especially at high doses or when used concurrently. These drugs include:

  • Antibiotics (but not all antibiotics, so be sure to carefully read your medication inserts).
  • Diuretics (which treat high blood pressure and swelling).
  • Laxatives (especially those containing oral sodium phosphate).
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (also known as NSAIDs, which are used to treat inflammatory conditions such as aches, pains, stiffness, swelling, and fever. These popular medications include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen)
  • Proton pump inhibitors (also knowns as PPIs, are often used to treat heartburn such. Popular brands include Prilosec®, Prevacid®, and Nexium®)
  • It’s important to also note that statin drugs often cause muscle pain, which is a symptom of muscle damage. This prompts muscles to release a protein called myoglobin that can often prompt kidney dysfunction.

Many other drugs can endanger the kidneys, which is why should never ignore the inserts included with your medications.

Give your kidneys a nourishing boost

Clearly, there are a lot of factors that can do harm to your kidneys, but luckily there are many ways to support them as well. And one of them happens to be incredibly delicious!

A few months ago, I told you about a “kidney-support buffet” recommended by Dr. Marc Micozzi in his Integrative Protocol for Defeating Diabetes. For a diet your kidneys will love, Dr. Micozzi explains that you simply can’t go wrong with antioxidant-rich, anti-inflammatory fruits and vegetables.

Simply click here to revisit the long list of foods guaranteed to give your kidneys the nutritional boost they need to keep working hard every single day. Dr. Micozzi also includes a list of key supplements that can help keep your kidneys in top shape.

Since diabetes is the leading cause of kidney disease, you’ll find that the natural solutions for preventing diabetes are also good for your kidneys.
