Prevent, treat, and stop the recurrence of cancer with this powerhouse food secret

When you’re fighting cancer, eating a wide variety of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables isn’t only a good idea, it can quite literally be a lifesaver.

You can thank the nutritional powers of phytochemicals for that.

Phytochemicals are the compounds that protect plants as they grow, but they also protect us! When we eat them, they produce potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in our bodies.

And one phytochemical in particular — a citrus bioflavonoid called apigenin — actually has the wonderfully unique ability to turn malignant cancer cells back into healthy cells.

I realize that this might sound like medical sorcery, but as a wealth of science shows, apigenin’s effects are very real and can be very beneficial for millions of cancer patients.

An uncommonly powerful anti-cancer agent

For more than 30 years, food scientists have studied the potent anti-cancer capabilities of apigenin. Since the mid-80s, research has shown that apigenin triggers cancer-fighting effects in a surprising variety of cancers, including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, leukemia, liver cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer.

For instance, in one test on an aggressive form of breast cancer implanted in mice, apigenin shrank tumors, compared to mice who weren’t given the compound. The researchers confirmed that apigenin slowed progression of breast cancer in three ways:

  1. Inducing cell death
  2. Inhibiting cell proliferation
  3. Reducing expression of a gene associated with cancer growth

And in another trial, researchers showed that apigenin helps make chemotherapy more effective by improving the absorption of therapeutic cancer drugs.

But these are just a few of the benefits of apigenin, which Dr. Fred Pescatore calls “an uncommonly powerful anticancer agent.”

In his Essential Protocol to a Cancer-Free Future, Dr. Pescatore shares a remarkable review of apigenin research, stating, “Scientists have discovered that apigenin launches an attack against abnormal cells on several different fronts — all of which act in tandem to thwart and reverse cancer growth.”

Apigenin disrupts all of cancer’s little tricks

To understand how apigenin reverses cancer, you should first know that your body is protected with a natural tumor suppressor called p53.

Dr. Pescatore explains that this protein triggers the death of cells with damaged DNA — in other words, cancer cells. But cancer cells are sometimes able to escape p53 and survive. Until, that is, they meet their match with apigenin.

As Dr. Pescatore notes, apigenin triggers the activation of p53, which is the secret behind apigenin’s ability to lower cancer cells’ resistance to chemotherapy and improve responses to cancer treatments.

And apigenin derails cancer in another important way. Dr. Pescatore cites a study that shows how apigenin blocks vascular endothelial growth factor. This prohibits angiogenesis — the process in which tumors produce tiny new blood vessels to help them grow and spread.

“In other words,” Dr. Pescatore says, “apigenin starves malignant tumors, stopping cancer development.”

Apigenin also blocks cancer’s ability to trick your body’s natural cell cycles. According to one breakthrough study, Dr. Pescatore says, “Apigenin restores a normal life cycle to cancer cells — literally, turning cancer cells back into normal cells.

“This gives malignant cells a different set of ‘instructions’ that makes them vulnerable to programmed cell death, when they otherwise wouldn’t be.”

In all these ways, apigenin helps to prevent and treat cancer. But it’s also been shown to reduce the likelihood of cancer recurrence.

Dr. Pescatore cites a study that observed 29 patients who underwent surgery for colon cancer. Of the study group, 15 took a 20 mg apigenin supplement and 14 took a placebo. Four years later, three participants in the placebo group had a recurrence of their cancer, but everyone in the apigenin group remained in remission!

Power up dinnertime with apigenin-rich foods and spices

Dr. Pescatore notes that it’s also a great idea to get apigenin from your food sources as well. These include:

  • Basil
  • Beans
  • Broccoli
  • Celery
  • Chamomile
  • Endive
  • Leeks
  • Onions
  • Oregano
  • Parsley
  • Red peppers
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Tomatoes

And by all means, indulge in chamomile tea. Dr. Pescatore notes that this tea’s famous calming effect is almost certainly due to apigenin content.

As for supplements, Dr. Pescatore offers this recommendation: “Swanson currently offers a single-ingredient apigenin product derived from grapefruit. But an alternative is a chamomile extract standardized for apigenin.”

Dr. Pescatore recommends following the dosage recommendation on the product label. You can find more information about these supplements in the Resource Directory included with Dr. Pescatore’s Essential Protocol to a Cancer-Free Future.
