What to expect when you’re expecting aggressive prostate cancer

Today, I have an important message for three groups of people:

  1. Men who want to prevent prostate cancer
  2. Men with prostate cancer who want to significantly improve their chances of beating the disease
  3. Women concerned about the health of the important men in their lives—husbands, fathers, sons, friends, etc.

So that should cover…just about everybody!

And that’s perfect, because everyone (both male and female) can benefit from following this time-tested diet, designed to promote optimal health (including prostate health). And for men specifically, this diet can be extremely helpful—especially in the midst of fighting prostate cancer.

Fight aggressively—but only when necessary

In Dr. Marc Micozzi’s Insider’s Ultimate Guide to Perfect Prostate Health, he offers a crucial piece of advice to any man who’s just been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer: Get a second opinion.

He says, “I urge you to seek out several pathologists’ opinions to make sure you have a truly aggressive type of prostate cancer. Remember, half of all men diagnosed with the disease will die with it—not from it.”

You should also be aware of the particularly harsh consequences that come from conventional treatments like radiation and surgical removal of the prostate. The potential side effects of these interventions can be brutal, causing issues like:

  • Bowel problems
  • Diminished sexual function
  • Impotence
  • Urinary incontinence

Any one of these side effects can prompt anxiety and depression, and significantly lower your quality of life, so making absolutely certain you need aggressive treatment is a must.

But if you do require this level of treatment, Dr. Micozzi strongly recommends incorporating several simple and natural interventions to improve your outcome.

Today we’re going to discuss one of his primary recommendations: Dr. Micozzi’s Prostate Cancer Prevention and Reversal Diet.

Set sail on this sea of excellent nutrition

As Dr. Micozzi notes, eating well doesn’t have to be a chore! In fact, his prostate cancer diet is quite delicious, as well as effective.

It begins with simple, straight-forward recommendations:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Full-fat dairy (including cheeses)
  • Grass-fed, free-range red meat
  • Healthy oils
  • Moderate amounts of alcohol (including red wine)
  • Nuts
  • Wild-caught fish

And along with these feast-worthy menu choices, Dr. Micozzi adds these notes:

  • Limit processed carbohydrates—basically anything white (white flour, white bread, white pasta, white rice, etc.), pastries, fruit juices, cereals, and sugar-sweetened beverages.
  • Cut out sugars.
  • Eat whole grains and starches in moderation (such as steel-cut oats, 100 percent whole wheat, and potatoes).

Dr. Micozzi points out that these are the key principles of a Mediterranean-style diet. And as he notes, plenty of research shows that this type of balanced diet “significantly improves health outcomes across the board. And it significantly improves prostate cancer outcomes specifically.”

In one study, researchers followed 750 men with prostate cancer and more than 1,200 healthy control participants. Analysis of the men’s diets revealed a “significant” link between high adherence to a Mediterranean-style diet and a reduced risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

The men who followed this diet were less likely to have a high Gleason score (which I recently explained here), while men who followed a “prudent” low-fat diet didn’t experience any risk reduction.

The meat of the matter

It’s worth highlighting two crucial parts of Dr. Micozzi’s Prostate Cancer Prevention and Reversal Diet: his recommendations for meat and fat consumption.

It’s true that they clash with many so-called “experts” who, as Dr. Micozzi puts it, “really should know the actual science by now.”

But old myths and misconceptions die hard, even though evidence clearly shows that whole foods like meat, fish, cheese, and olive oil actually protect against the development of prostate cancer.

For Dr. Micozzi, the wisdom of eating meat is revealed in its rich nutrition—beginning with protein.

He says, “Meat, together with fish, is the best source of protein there is. But most people don’t get enough of it. In fact, studies show people need about twice as much protein as what the government recommends just to maintain muscle mass, physical performance and vitality as they get older.”

What’s less obvious is that meat is also a valuable source of rare, bioavailable nutrients such as iodine, magnesium, zinc, and especially calcium. And, as Dr. Micozzi points out, “Calcium supplements are ineffective and dangerous, so, you really should only get calcium from foods. And meat is a prime source.”

He adds that your body also needs the cholesterol and fat found in meat, although many doctors and nutritionists come unglued at this suggestion. But the evidence is so strong that the U.S. government’s dietary guidelines committee recently took dietary cholesterol and saturated fats off the “do not eat” list after 40 years of doling out bad advice.

“In my view,” Dr. Micozzi says, “red meat (and full-fat dairy) helps protect against prostate cancer in particular. But with one caveat—it must come from grass-fed, free-range sources.

Unlike grain-fed animals on factory farms, the meat from grass-fed animals is far more nutritious, with more vitamins and essential acids like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). As Dr. Micozzi notes, “Ongoing research links CLA to dramatic reductions in inflammation, obesity, and chronic disease—including prostate cancer.”
