Prevent the type of cancer that’s tripled death rates over the past 50 years

For most common cancers, the news is good: Mortality rates have been dropping since 2003, according to the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

But one cancer isn’t following that trend. In fact, just the opposite.

According to the NCI, liver cancer fatalities have been increasing by 2 to 3 percent each year. And since the 70s, yearly U.S. deaths linked to this cancer have tripled!

So…what’s wrong with this picture? Why does liver cancer continue to be so lethal?

Tragically, the soaring death toll can be traced back about 60 years to a medical mistake that affected millions. And there’s one group in particular caught in the crosshairs: Baby Boomers. (More on that in just a moment.)

So if you were born between 1945 and 1965, pay very close attention, because the advice I’m going to share from a prominent Manhattan doctor could very easily save your life.

And if you’re not a Boomer, you’re not out of the woods… I’ll fill you in on the common dietary mistakes that put your liver in danger, no matter your age.

A menacing virus, lying in wait

Understanding the wide range of essential functions your liver performs makes it quite clear why nurturing your liver health today will pay off in a big way in the long run.

Every chemical—whether it’s synthetic or natural—that enters your body from food, beverages, supplements, drugs, and the air you breathe is filtered and processed by your liver. This amazing organ helps regulate blood sugar, removes waste products from blood, stores and processes nutrients, and supports your immune system.

And that’s just for starters.

But if your liver becomes overloaded to the point of dysfunction, virtually every system in your body is at risk of shutting down.

The medical mistake that affected a generation

A moment ago, I mentioned a major medical mistake affecting the livers of many Baby Boomers. I’m talking about the link between insufficient sterilization of syringes and blood transfusion devices with transmission of the hepatitis C virus.

As a result, countless Baby Boomer children of the late 40s, 50s, and early 60s were exposed to hepatitis C.

And now, according to the CDC, approximately 75 percent of those affected by the virus are Baby Boomers, totaling to about 1.8 million people.

Rates of the virus dropped off sharply when disposable syringes were introduced in the 60s.

What’s odd about the virus is that it often lies dormant in the body for decades. It can be detected with a blood test and treated, but if it’s not, it can cause scarring of the liver called cirrhosis.

And cirrhosis sharply boosts your risk of liver cancer.

So if you’re a Baby Boomer, step one in protecting your liver is obvious: Ask your doctor for a blood test and share your concerns about hepatitis C.

The Western Diet problem

Step two: If your diet isn’t in the best shape, it’s time to get it in order before it’s too late.

In Dr. Fred Pescatore’s Essential Cancer Protocol, he points out that while chronic hepatitis and alcoholism are primary causes of cirrhosis, a far more common cause is taking a massive toll.

He says, “It’s a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD. (I’ll just call it ‘fatty liver.’) It’s triggered by obesity and type 2 diabetes.

“And fatty liver is quickly shaping up to be a modern public health disaster. An estimated 80 to 100 million Americans suffer from fatty liver.”

Dr. Pescatore explains that the very factors that prompt fatty liver are also the factors that make your waistline expand:

  • Excess consumption of refined sugars
  • Bad fats
  • Not enough exercise

Dr. Pescatore describes how the dominoes fall when these bad habits are repeated year after year: “Fatty liver paves the way to inflammation…then cirrhosis…and, eventually, to primary liver cancer.”

In Dr. Pescatore’s view, millions of people are eating their way into a liver cancer crisis.

But as deadly as this problem is, there is a clear path to a solution. As Dr. Pescatore puts it, we ate our way into this crisis, and we can eat our way right back out.

He says, “I think a Mediterranean-style whole food diet—a diet rich in fresh vegetables, protein and healthy fats—is the cornerstone of good health. Without it, nothing else you do really matters.

“Simply changing your diet will effectively address the risk that obesity and diabetes pose to your liver.”

Supplements to help you succeed

While you’re improving your dietary approach, Dr. Pescatore recommends several supplements for complete liver support. Here are three standouts from his list, with suggested dosages:

  • Glucevia™: A relatively new supplement, Glucevia™ can help your body eliminate stored fat in the liver—1,000 mg per day.
  • Milk Thistle: This botanical protects your liver and can slow progression of cirrhosis—500 mg of silymarin (the active component of milk thistle) twice daily.
  • N-acetyl cysteine: Your body requires this amino acid to form glutathione, the so-called “master antioxidant” because of its powerful benefits for your brain and nervous system—1,200 mg per day.

You can find Dr. Pescatore’s full list of liver-support supplements in his Essential Cancer Protocol along with many other tips and insights to help you protect your liver and every other part of your body from this insidious disease.
