The coronavirus risk nobody is talking about

You’ve probably heard that complicating health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and any respiratory dysfunction puts you at greater risk of developing a serious case of coronavirus.

But there’s another underlying risk factor almost no one is talking about: obesity.

As new evidence about coronavirus continues to emerge, doctors have spotted an alarming trend: Anyone, of any age, with a high body mass index (BMI) is at greater risk of this deadly virus.

BMI is a measure of body fat based on your ratio of weight to height.

“BMI is the Achilles’ heel for American patients,” Jennifer Lighter, M.D., of NYU School of Medicine told Science News.

More than 40 percent of U.S. adults have a BMI over 30 which qualifies as obese.

Dr. Lighter and her colleagues tracked 3,615 coronavirus patients from early March to early April and found that 38 percent were obese. Those who were over age 60 with a BMI higher than 35 were more than twice as likely to be admitted to intensive care and three times likely to die from infection.

Therefore, those who carry excess weight need to be on high alert of telltale coronavirus symptoms such as shortness of breath, fever, dry cough, or a sudden loss of smell.

As one doctor told Science News, obesity puts excessive weight on the chest which can prompt breathing problems and lower oxygen levels.

So there’s never been a better time to work on shedding those excess pounds. And as Dr. Fred Pescatore points out in his Ultimate Heart Protection Protocol, there’s one easy cooking tip that can help you lose weight: use macadamia nut oil.

The easiest way to jumpstart weight loss: switch your cooking oil

To demonstrate macadamia oil’s weight control benefits, Dr. Pescatore cites a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Researchers assigned participants to one of two diets. One diet was rich in palmitic acid, the main fatty acid in palm oil and animal fat. The other diet favored oleic acid. That’s the primary monounsaturated fatty acid, or MUFA, in olive oil, avocados, and, most abundantly, in macadamia nut oil.

Results showed that the oleic acid group was more active and burned more fat at rest compared to the other group.

The “secret” is in the MUFAs, which Dr. Pescatore calls macadamia oil’s “biggest benefit.” That’s because MUFAs not only help you lose weight, but they also help you reduce visceral belly fat, which can boost heart disease risk.

And he adds, “They can even help you maintain healthy blood sugar, promote proper levels of inflammation, encourage healthy cholesterol, and support memory power.”

And macadamia’s rich, buttery flavor will also help inspire you to get up and get cooking.
