The strawberry secret that can help you stay cancer-free

Did you know that your body could be laying the groundwork for cancer as we speak?

It all starts with aging, or senescent, cells.

Senescent cells start out as normal cells. But after years of stress and damage, they stop functioning properly. And they no longer take part in the normal, healthy cell cycle.

When this happens, they release inflammatory compounds that alert the immune system to clear away the damaged cells. But as you become older, your immune system becomes less effective in this cleanup effort.

The result: The damaged cells begin to accumulate while still secreting inflammatory compounds, which harms surrounding healthy cells and contributes to general aging.

And even worse, this process promotes chronic diseases—including cancer. This has prompted urgent attention from anti-aging researchers.

And Big Pharma has developed a class of drugs, called senolytics. These drugs disable biological pathways that keep senescent cells alive. Preliminary studies show that these drugs can delay or alleviate age-related diseases.

So is this the solution to cancer and the Fountain of Youth all wrapped up into one pill?

Dr. Fred Pescatore answers that question with a simple, “Not quite.”

In his Essential Cancer Protocol, Dr. Pescatore explains, “Unfortunately, pharmaceutical senolytics—many of which are cancer drugs—tend to be toxic not only to senescent cells, but also to the healthy cells around them. Which leaves researchers looking for alternatives that are less toxic but have the same positive effects.”

Teasing out the benefits of this unique cancer-fighter

Luckily, researchers found a safer way to reduce cancer-causing senescent cells.

It’s a compound called fisetin and it’s a naturally occurring antioxidant found in high concentrations in strawberries.

Dr. Pescatore notes that fisetin appears to naturally inhibit tumor growth by reducing angiogenesis—the process that allows blood vessels to form and feed tumors. Because of this, researchers believe that fisetin may help prevent certain types of cancer from spreading.

He also notes that fisetin has powerful antioxidant properties that not only destroy senescent cells, but also leave healthy cells unharmed.

“It’s exciting,” he says, “to see what impressive effects fisetin is having with cancer prevention, reducing the viability of senescent cells, and in fighting high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and inflammation.”

How to easily add fisetin to your diet

The good news is, it’s easy to boost your fisetin intake. In addition to the No. 1 food source I mentioned above—strawberries—you can also get fisetin from:

  • Apples
  • Cucumbers
  • Grapes
  • Kiwi
  • Onions
  • Peaches
  • Persimmon

Dr. Pescatore highlights a study in the journal Cancer Prevention Research where researchers gave 75 people with precancerous lesions in the esophagus 1 or 2 ounces of freeze-dried strawberry powder daily. Eighty percent of those who received the larger dose had a reversal in the severity of their lesions.

Bottom line, he says, adding more fisetin-rich foods to your daily regimen is a very good idea. And an even better idea is to give your fisetin intake an additional boost with a supplement. Dr. Pescatore recommends taking a 50 to 150 mg supplement of fisetin daily.
