Side effect-free vitamin works just as well as asthma drugs

If you have asthma, this upcoming flu season might feel like you’re tiptoeing through a minefield. Not only can the flu trigger asthma attacks, having asthma also increases your risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19.

To help you through this perilous season, Dr. Marc Micozzi has one very important tip for asthma sufferers: “If you were to take only one vitamin, vitamin D would be it.”

Dr. Micozzi cites a recent review of nine clinical trials that shows that vitamin D can treat asthma safely and effectively.

“In fact,” Dr. Micozzi says, “the researchers found that small daily doses of vitamin D reduced the risk of serious asthma episodes by more than one-third. And more importantly, almost two-thirds of the adults and children in the study who took daily vitamin D supplements didn’t need emergency medical care for their asthma.”

In another vitamin D trial, researchers analyzed nine clinical trials that included 43 children and 700 adults with mild to moderate asthma. The analysis showed that taking between 400 IU and 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily produced a lower risk of asthma episodes that required use of medications.

Similar doses of vitamin D also decreased participants’ need for emergency medical care by a very impressive 60 percent.

Here’s Dr. Micozzi’s take on the study: “It’s important to note that these dosages are much less than the 10,000 IU (or 250 mcg) of vitamin D I recommend everyone take daily—especially in the winter months, when most people aren’t able to photosynthesize vitamin D from the sun. So imagine what effects 10,000 IU a day could have on asthma sufferers!”

Dr. Micozzi notes that the reasons behind vitamin D’s benefits for asthma sufferers remain unclear, but the researchers believe the vitamin may trigger antiviral and anti-inflammatory responses that decrease lung sensitivity.

And unlike bronchodilator drugs that have side effects like heart arrhythmia and fatal acute cardiac arrest—vitamin D’s only “side effects” include reduced risks of heart disease, cancer, and dementia.

So Dr. Micozzi offers this simple advice to asthma patients: “Ignore the mainstream’s wish-washy attitudes and blatant disregard for the science, and stock up on this supplement right away!”
