The common kitchen staple that battles autoimmune disease

New research has revealed that the common kitchen staple sodium bicarbonate—better known as baking soda—may help treat common autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

In his Inflammation Fighting Protocol, Dr. Marc Micozzi cites a new study from the Medical College of Georgia.

The research focused on baking soda’s effect on specialized connective tissue cells, called mesothelial cells. These cells line the internal organs and body cavities.

Mesothelial cells have little, finger-like protrusions called microvilli. Microvilli survey and monitor the internal environment, detecting potential molecular and cellular invaders, and signaling when your immune system should mount a protective inflammatory response.

But in patients with autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, mesothelial cells may sense threats even when there aren’t any.

“As a result,” Dr. Micozzi says, “they can signal the immune system to attack non-existent invaders, sparking inflammation—which can make your current condition worse, or increase your risk of developing additional diseases, like heart disease.”

Fortunately for patients with autoimmune diseases, researchers have learned that baking soda thwarts the unnecessary inflammation triggered by these cells.

In the Medical College of Georgia study, researchers gave volunteers a solution of water mixed with sodium bicarbonate daily. After two weeks, mesothelial cells in the spleen, kidneys, and blood stopped promoting inflammation—and instead, started reducing it.

Dr. Micozzi notes that the researchers also report that just one dose of baking soda solution produced anti-inflammatory effects that lasted for at least four hours.

Based on these results, if you’re suffering from an autoimmune disease, adding baking soda to your diet could be beneficial. And Dr. Micozzi offers his recommendation for doing just that…

How to mix up your own at home

Here’s Dr. Micozzi’s easy “Go-To Baking Soda Remedy”:

  • Ingredients call for ½ to 1 teaspoon of baking soda and an 8 oz. glass of water. Dr. Micozzi notes that you can use still filtered water because the baking soda will turn it into a seltzer. And you can have it cool or at room temperature, to your taste, but the baking soda will dissolve and be ready faster at higher temperatures.
  • Next, he says, “Mix baking soda into water, stirring until it’s fully dissolved. Then drink! Repeat this up to 6 times a day, with doses spaced at least 2 hours apart. Add a twist of lemon to enhance the taste.”

Dr. Micozzi stresses that inflammation is the root cause of so many common chronic diseases, and this simple remedy could be useful for a wide variety of ailments, including heart, disease, cancer, and obesity.
