Does this volcanic gemstone hold the key to Alzheimer’s prevention?

There’s one overlooked—and understudied—mineral that could prevent the devasting symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease: Low-dose lithium.

Lithium comes from peculiar gemstones forged during ancient volcanic eruptions. You may recognize lithium as a drug prescribed for bipolar disorder. And, yes, in high doses of 150 to 1,800 mg, lithium is a medication.

But as certified health coach Bill Gottlieb explains in his Essential Age-Eraser Protocol, research shows that in very low doses—1 to 20 mg—lithium is an effective nutritional treatment.

Bill cites the stunning success of a Brazilian study where researchers recruited 45 older individuals with mild cognitive impairment. Participants were divided into two groups and received either a low-dose lithium supplement or a placebo.

“After just one year,” Bill says, “more of the people taking lithium had stable cognitive performance—that is, no mental decline. Additionally, those on low-dose lithium had a better memory, more focus, and clearer thinking. And fewer of those taking lithium developed Alzheimer’s.”

In another study, 15 months of low-dose lithium in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s resulted in no cognitive decline, no memory loss, and no increased confusion. Those in the placebo group continued to experience mental decline over the same period.

But that’s not all…

Columbia University researchers recruited three Alzheimer’s patients who were experiencing agitation, hallucinations, and delusions—symptoms that are usually treated with antipsychotic drugs, which have troubling side effects.

But just two weeks of low-dose lithium supplementation produced dramatic changes, including better sleep and a marked decrease in paranoia, auditory hallucinations, agitation, and aggression.

So, how does lithium work?

Most importantly, lithium energizes an enzyme called GSK3, or glycogen synthase kinase-beta. In turn, that enzyme stops the accumulation of beta amyloid plaques and tau tangles—the abnormal brain changes that signal the development of Alzheimer’s.

Lithium also dramatically increases levels of PLA2, or cytosolic phospholipase A2, a protective enzyme on the membrane of brain cells that is low in Alzheimer’s disease.

Additionally, lithium protects against brain inflammation and oxidation. lowers high levels of glutamate—a compound that damages neurons, corrects the imbalance of calcium in brain cells. and increases serotonin—a neurotransmitter that regulates mood and behavior.

Dosage-wise—Bill takes 10 mg of lithium daily to prevent cognitive decline. And that’s also the dose he recommends to his older clients—particularly those who are suffering from age-related memory loss or mild cognitive impairment.

Bill also notes that low-dose lithium is very safe—so no need to worry about side effects. However, even though lithium is widely available over the counter and online, not all lithium is created equal.

Bill explains, “Lithium is a mineral salt, with different forms. Lithium carbonate is used for pharmaceutical dosing. For low-dose nutritional lithium, lithium orotate or lithium citrate is recommended, which are available over the counter and are absorbed more easily than lithium carbonate.”
